THE CATHEDRAL

Ashyn watched Macky merely shrug at Ashyn’s revelation. “Whatever you say, Ash,” He replied. “I’m not fer wantin’ ta argue an’ be seen. We’ll talk ‘bout it later, after we’ve gotten a gander of this wizard ye want so bad.”

Good enough, Ashyn realized. It was shocking to learn that he had been sold into slavery, when this whole time he had just started enjoying his life. But Macky was right. He did come here for a purpose. He had to know if that man really was Xexial Bontain.

The foundation of the cathedral, where they now stood, was raised from the ground it sat upon. When the cathedral was designed, it was created so that it sat completely within the foundation. By creating a structure that was smaller than the foundation it resided upon, it gave it a sort of lip that they could stand on. In response to this visible mar, the builders used tall hedges to hide it, and so it went unnoticed. Something only the constructors knew about, to make use for any maintenance that would be required in the future winters.

Macky knew it was there, however, and they used it now to shimmy along between the wall and the hedges. Luckily, the hedges were tall enough that should someone walk by, the two of them could duck down and not be seen.

They scooted along the wall until they came to a slight depression. Ashyn noticed that each small dip in the surface led to a window above them. Ashyn thought it was good enough, but Macky shook his head. So Ashyn continued around the rounded lip until they came to a third depression. Macky tapped him on the shoulder and pointed up.

“This one’ll have a good view of the entire chamber,” Macky told him.

Ashyn looked up. High above his reach, still some five feet above Ashyn’s head, was the long arched window. It was meant solely for light to illuminate the interior, not for people outside to look in. Exactly something Ashyn wanted to do.

“How are we gonna see him?” Ashyn asked.

“Ye gonna stand on me shoulders, watcha think ye was gonna do?” Macky answered.

“Ye dunna wanna look to?” Ashyn replied.

“Nah, seen ‘im afore. I’m good,” he said with a crooked smile.

“And if someone walks by?” Ashyn questioned.

“Then ye gets a nice bruise cuz I’m gonna drop ye,” Macky answered plainly. “Unless ye have a better plan.”

Ashyn put his fists on his hips, “I’m eight winters, how good of a plan ye think I canna come up with?”

Macky shrugged, “Well then get up on me shoulders, ye lout.”

Seeing no other alternative, Ashyn put his moccasin in Macky’s cupped hands and bounded up on to the older boy’s shoulders. He grabbed onto the stone sill as best he could and attempted to balance on the teen’s narrow shoulders. Macky wobbled under Ashyn’s weight.

“Quit moving,” Ashyn hissed.

“Canna helps it,” Macky added. “Dunna have good footing, an yer heavy fer a kid.”

Ashyn rolled his eyes at Macky and braced himself against the sill.
